Garfield Building (Cleveland)

The Garfield Building is a historic 1898-built 150 foot 13 story high-rise on the corner of Euclid and East Sixth Street across the street from the future 515 Euclid Avenue skyscraper in downtown Cleveland's East 4th Street 〔http://skyscraperpage.com/diagrams/?buildingID=21296 ''1965 East Sixth Street'' Retrieved on 2015-09-17〕
. The edifice was built by two of President James A. Garfield's sons and it was 11 stories when first erected but two more stories were added later. The Garfield is notable for being the headquarters of NatCity Investments which went bankrupt in the 2008 financial meltdown on Wall Street which led to them being controversially bought by PNC Financial Services of Pittsburgh.〔http://www.bloomberg.com/research/stocks/private/snapshot.asp?privcapId=21979 ''Company Overview of NatCity Investments Inc.'' Retrieved on 2015-09-17〕 The Garfield is one city block wide and stands directly west of the former National City Bank's headquarters in the Guardian Bank Building 〔Hoefler, S. P. (2003). ''Images of America: Cleveland's downtown architecture''. Arcadia: Great Britain.〕
==Recent Developments==
The Garfield has recently been the subject of much debate in downtown Cleveland. The building sits mostly vacant and it has been hard for investors to agree on what to do with the property. As this had been the focus on the building for years, no one was excepting what happened on April 13, 2015, when huge chunks of the building's parapet fell onto cars and the sidewalk 150 feet below.〔http://www.garfieldbuildingcleveland.com/ ''Garfield Building-Cleveland'' Retrieved on 2105-09-17〕 The company that owns the Garfield (Millennia) quickly went into full damage control and reassured the city of Cleveland and the public that it was assessing the problem and would pay for any damages that occurred. Millennia took possession of the Garfield in 2014 with the hopes of turning the dormant structure into high end apartments.〔McFee, M. J. (April 22, 2014) Millennia Companies to buy Garfield Building for apartments, plans downtown Cleveland HQ move ''Plain Dealer''〕 This in turn sparked a big back lash about building inspections in the city of Cleveland, despite the fact that Millennia cleaned up all the collateral damage.〔McFee, M. J. ''Cleveland considers facade inspection law after Garfield incident''http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2015/06/cleveland_considers_facade-ins.html Retrieved on 2015-09-17〕 There has now been a general call for property owners to do these inspections periodically and to demonstrate the appropriate amount of necessary maintenance and treatment to the older buildings in the city. Millennia has announced that the building when renovated and turned into the 172 apartments will be named Corning Place 〔McFee, M. J. (January 26, 2015) Garfield Building sells for $6 million, will be remade as Corning Place apartments, retail ''Plain Dealer''〕
